System Breach

System Breach

A retro first-person shooter in the spirit of the 90s classics: fight through twelve sectors of a hostile grid, unlock three weapons and destroy the kernel.

A retro first-person shooter where you breach a hostile grid sector by sector until you reach the kernel. Free to play in the browser on itch.io, on desktop and mobile, and open source under the MIT licence.

System Breach

The grid

Twelve sectors, each one generated on the fly and themed in its own colours. Drones hover towards you and shoot, skitters run at you and explode, sentinels fire in bursts of three, and every third sector a core guards the way out. The kernel waits in sector 12; destroy it and the system is breached, then the grid keeps spawning hostiles in endless mode for as long as you last.

The arsenal

You start with a pulse rifle, find a scatter gun in sector 2 and a rail gun in sector 4 that pierces every enemy in its line. All three share one energy pool, so when it runs dry you fight with your fists. Shield and energy pickups, enemy drops and a bonus after each sector keep you going, and the enemies fire faster and move quicker the deeper you get.

How it is built

  • A raycaster on a 2D canvas, with a neon grid floor, lit ceiling panels and depth-sorted sprites
  • Over twenty sound effects synthesised with the Web Audio API, positioned in stereo
  • Keyboard and mouse with pointer lock, or a virtual stick and fire button on mobile
  • Plain JavaScript modules with no engine, no dependencies and no build step
  • The same build is the footer easter egg on kenodo.com and the itch.io release
